STOP PRESS
Wonderful patient comment to inspire us all to do more of this wonderful work.
It came from a cancer patient before and during his bronchoscopy at our Hertfordshire project. The patient was convinced he had cancer but thankfully it turned out to be bacterial pneumonia.
"I will always remember how you appeared to me three days ago-as an angel to bring some comfort and resilience in a time of great need. A truly life changing experience.
Who should I contact to say how valuable your services are? Somebody, somewhere has got something right for once- and I want them to know that at least one other person out here knows it and wants to shout it out".
How wonderful to have this confirmation that our work is valued and appreciated.

Past and Current Projects
We have funded healers at University College London Hospital,Addenbrookes Hospital in Cambridge,Princess Alexandra's in Epping,Kent & Canterbury Hospital and our new project in Hertfordshire begins in September.
Endorsement from University College London Hospital
Treating the whole person, not only their cancer is central to the way services will be provided in the UCH Macmillan Cancer Centre when it opens in April 2012 . This will be very welcome news to Angie Buxton-King who, as complementary therapy team manager, can be largely credited for introducing the current provision of complementary therapies available to cancer patients at the Rosenheim and UCH.
"Angie's behind the scenes work - attracting funding, setting up tools to measure patient satisfaction and developing policies so that therapists work to the same, consistently high standards - has laid the foundations for complementary therapy to become fully integrated into cancer care" said Martin Lerner, divisional manger for cancer services. "Our long term aim is to offer complementary services as part of the care pathway for all cancer patients who would like to receive them."
Patients consistently give good feedback but to demonstrate how complementary therapies can benefit cancer patients, Angie worked with the haematology nursing research team to design a clinical trial to examine the effects of Reiki on patient quality of life. This groundbreaking randomised controlled trial will attempt to recruit more than 100 patients over the next two years.
Angie and husband Graham leave UCLH with a lasting legacy. In 2006 they created ‘The Sam Buxton Sunflower Healing Trust' charity in memory of Angie's son Sam. The Trust has donated over £100k towards the UCLH complementary therapy team and funds five other projects at cancer centres in the UK. Through their Trust, Angie and Graham will continue to be strong advocates for integrating complementary therapies into healthcare.
How can my hospital apply for funding ?
Complementary therapy (CT) is increasingly demanded and expected by patients undergoing cancer treatments. An increasing amount of research clearly demonstrates that CT is important to support patients through conventional treatment. University College London Hospital is currently carrying out a RCT trial evaluating the effects of Reiki for patients undergoing conventional chemotherapy protocols.
SBSHT is committed to providing funds to NHS hospitals and cancer centers to engage the services of a Reiki practitioner or Healer for cancer patients.
What do we need from the recruiting center?
a) We need to be contacted by the hospital or centre in question
b) We will visit the centre to see how and where the therapist will be working with patients
c) We will donate funds into any suitable NHS or related fund.
d) The therapist will be given an NHS fixed term contract or an honorary contract
e) The therapist will be required to wear a SBSHT polo shirt and provide us with quarterly reports

Dear Sam Buxton Sunflower Healing Trust Supporters,
It has been a while since we wrote to you updating you on the charities work and that is because we have been working hard behind the scenes. As you may remember SBSHT has a Community Interest Company asset linked into it called The Guild of Professional Healers. Much has been changing in the world of Spiritual Healing and Reiki and the need arose for training material to be fit for the 21st century by complying with the standards that have been created by the sectors regulatory bodies. It therefore gives us great pleasure to launch our own Spiritual Healing material that complies with the National Occupational Standards and the Core Curriculum for Spiritual Healing .We have also brought our Reiki Training up to the required standard of NOS to ensure that we can deliver safe and competent Healers for clients/patient (We will still be able to provide tailored training for those who simply wish to help family and friends in both Spiritual Healing and Reiki). Our membership for The Guild continues to grow and there are currently opportunities for tutors to deliver this exciting new material. The charity continues to donate funds to The NHS to provide Healers to work alongside conventional protocols ( 20 to date) and the reports we receive from these projects confirm to us that we are providing a vital service that supports not only patients but the families and staff that are part of the circle of care. The Guilds shop is currently being stocked with new items for you to have a browse through -any sales support SBSHT so please take a look when you have a moment. Thank you for all your support which means a great deal to us.
